Today marks the start of Foster Care Fortnight – 2 weeks dedicated to shining a light on something quietly powerful that happens in homes across Hull every single day: fostering.
This isn’t just another awareness week. It’s a heartfelt celebration of the incredible families in our city who open their doors, hearts, and lives to children who need a safe, stable place to land. It’s also a call – a gentle but important one – for more local people to think: Could I do that too?
Foster Care Fortnight
Run by The Fostering Network, Foster Care Fortnight is a national campaign running from Monday 12th May to Sunday 25th May 2025.
The idea is simple but powerful: share real stories, celebrate real carers, and remind people that fostering changes lives – not just for the child, but for the whole family, and for the whole community too.
Why It Matters Right Here in Hull
Hull’s full of heart. But it’s also full of children who need that heart to keep beating loud and strong for them. We’ve got one of the highest numbers of looked after children in the country – and every single one of those children deserves the same things we want for our own: love, care, and someone to say, “I’ve got you.”
Foster carers in Hull aren’t superheroes. They’re everyday people – teaching assistants, delivery drivers, nurses, hairdressers – who’ve made space in their homes and routines for something life-changing.
We’ve got foster carers in East Hull who’ve raised entire sibling groups so brothers and sisters don’t get split up. We’ve got carers in Bransholme who’ve helped teenagers feel safe enough to go back to school. We’ve got families in Hessle and west Hull who’ve made room at the table, even when money’s tight and time’s tighter.
They’re doing it not for the praise, but because it’s the right thing to do.
Why Hull Fostering Backs Foster Care Fortnight
At Hull Fostering, we don’t just support Foster Care Fortnight – we live and breathe it. Every child we find a home for, every foster carer we walk alongside, every phone call we answer – it all starts with raising awareness.
This fortnight gives us the chance to shout about fostering – loudly and proudly – and remind people that we need you.
Not everyone can foster, but everyone can help.
What You Can Do
- Follow Hull Fostering on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. Each day of Foster Care Fortnight, we’ll be sharing something real – a story, a quote, a fact, a smile – from the world of Hull Fostering.
- Share our posts. You never know who it might reach. One share might find a new foster carer.
- Talk about it. Mention fostering at the school gates, in the staff room, in the queue at Heron or the chippy. You might plant the seed in someone’s mind.
- Ask us. Got questions about fostering? Want to chat about what it really involves? We’re here. Drop us a message on social media @HullFostering, email fostering@hullcc.gov.uk or visit www.hullfostering.co.uk.
We’re aiming to make this the most genuine, Hull-hearted Foster Care Fortnight yet – one that shows what’s possible when a community pulls together for its children.
So whether you’re a mum, dad, grandparent, neighbour or just someone who cares – please follow along, get involved, and help us give Hull’s young people the future they deserve.
Let’s show them they matter.
Let’s show them Hull’s got heart.
