At Hull Fostering, we know that good foster carers come in all shapes, sizes and ages.
This month, we’ve had the absolute pleasure of welcoming two incredible new carers into our fostering family - 22-year-old Jessie, just starting her journey, and 80-year-old Keith, returning to fostering after a 24-year break.
Yes, you read that right - 80. Keith is already making a huge difference.
After the loss of his beloved wife, Keith thought his fostering days were behind him. But the pull to care never left. With time, he realised he still had so much to give. He reached out, asked questions, and together we explored how fostering might fit into his life now.
The result - a big warm “yes” from us - and a very welcome return to the world of fostering for Keith.
He now offers -
- emergency care
- short stays
- weekend fostering
to primary school-aged children. His calm nature, life experience, and the way he listens has made him an instant hit with both the children and our team. Keith is not just a foster carer - he’s become an integral part of the Hull Fostering community.
So, if you’ve ever thought “I’m too old to foster” – please think again.
Whether you’re in your twenties or your eighties, fostering is about who you are – not how old you are. It’s about your heart, your home, your willingness to care.
There’s no one ‘type’ of foster carer. Some of the best foster carers we’ve ever met are retired, semi-retired, or simply ready for a new purpose in life.
And we get it - you might have questions. You might not even be sure if you’re allowed to foster. That’s okay! You don’t need to make any big decisions today. Just start by talking to us. We’re local, we’re friendly, and we genuinely love chatting to people about what fostering could look like for them.
You’d be surprised how fostering can fit around your life. Whether you’ve got a full house or an empty nest, a big family or live on your own – it all starts with getting in touch.

Age really is just a number - but the difference you can make lasts a lifetime.
Welcome Keith, and thank you for reminding us all that it’s never too late to care.
