This week marks Supported Lodgings Host Week (10–16 November), a national celebration of an often unsung but incredibly vital form of care.
Here at Hull Fostering, we’re proud to be joining the campaign led by Host The Future, helping shine a light on the extraordinary difference Supported Lodgings providers make to young people’s lives.
What is Supported Lodgings?
Supported Lodgings is a unique type of care designed for young people aged 16–21 who are ready to take their next step towards independence, but who still need a safe, stable home and a guiding hand along the way.
Rather than traditional fostering, it’s about offering a room in your home, and your time, patience, and encouragement, to a young person who might otherwise be facing life alone.
Hosts provide day-to-day support such as helping with cooking, budgeting, attending appointments, or learning practical skills for adult life. Many young people describe their hosts as “someone who believes in me” and that belief often becomes the foundation for their confidence and future success.
Hull Fostering is proud to support Supported Lodgings Host Week because we’ve seen first-hand how transformative this type of care can be. Our young people tell us that being part of a welcoming household helps them feel grounded, valued, and capable of achieving their goals.
Our providers tell us it’s one of the most rewarding things they’ve ever done.
But we need more people to come forward. As the cost of living and housing challenges continue to affect young people across the region, the demand for Supported Lodgings in Hull has never been greater. By opening your home and your heart, you could change a young person’s story forever.
To celebrate and raise awareness, Hull Fostering will be hosting three information stalls across the city throughout the week, where members of the public can drop by to chat, ask questions, and discover how Supported Lodgings works in Hull.
We’ll also be hosting a special Coffee, Crafts and Catch-Up session exclusively for our Supported Lodgings providers, a chance to come together, relax, and learn a new therapeutic craft designed to help young people manage feelings of anxiety. It’s one small way we can say thank you to our amazing providers for everything they do.
If you’d like to know more about becoming a Supported Lodgings provider, or simply want to understand how this type of care supports young people in our city, take a look at our new Supported Lodgings Information Booklet here
You can also reach our team by emailing fostering@hullcc.gov.uk or calling (01482) 612800 (option 2) to have an informal chat about what’s involved.
This Supported Lodgings Week, we celebrate our current hosts, thank our partners at Host The Future, and extend an open invitation to anyone who’s ever thought about making a difference; because sometimes, all it takes is one room and one person to help a young person find their future.
