A boy and girl in a kitchen

Every young person deserves not just a place to stay, but a home where they belong.

That’s exactly what Supported Lodgings provides for young people aged 16 to 21 who are ready to take steps toward independence but still need guidance, stability, and care along the way.

For Martin, kindness really is at the heart of everything. With many years of experience as a Supported Lodgings provider, Martin knows that what makes the biggest difference isn’t just the roof over someone’s head, it’s the warmth, patience, and understanding that come with it.

“Helping a young person find their feet takes time,” Martin explains. “But when they start to believe in themselves, that’s when you know it’s working. It’s kindness that gets them there.”

Through Supported Lodgings, Martin has helped countless young people learn life skills, gain confidence, and take those important first steps into adulthood.

Dawn and her family opened their home to Liv, and what began as a placement has grown into something lifelong.

“Liv will always be part of our family,” Dawn shares. “It’s such a privilege to be there for a young person who just needed a family to believe in her.”

Supported Lodgings allowed Dawn’s family to make a difference, not just for Liv, but for themselves, too. “You realise it’s not just about helping someone else; it changes you in the best possible way.”

The Figures Speak for Themselves

During a recent parliamentary debate, MP Rebecca Smith (Doncaster Central) and Children’s Minister Josh MacAlister shared powerful evidence of the difference Supported Lodgings makes -

  • 84% of young people say Supported Lodgings feels like home
  • 89% have a positive relationship with their provider
  • 90% feel more confident to live independently as a result

One young person put it perfectly - “Living in Supported Lodgings allowed me to take the college course I wanted and ultimately the career path I wanted to follow.”

Research also shows that when young people stay in Supported Lodgings for six months or more, there’s a 44% reduction in those not in education, employment or training (NEET). It’s one-tenth the cost of residential care, yet delivers far stronger long-term outcomes.

Why We Need More Providers in Hull

Despite these incredible outcomes, awareness remains low, with only around 30% of the public even aware of Supported Lodgings. Across the UK, local authorities report challenges in recruiting new providers.

Here in Hull, we know how life-changing this type of care can be, and we’re keen to find more people like Martin and Dawn who can offer a safe, supportive home to a young person in need of guidance.

Could You Be the Difference?

Supported Lodgings isn’t about being a traditional foster carer, it’s about offering space, support, and the belief that every young person deserves the chance to thrive.

If Martin and Dawn’s stories have inspired you, we’d love to hear from you.
