Supported Lodgings in Hull

At Hull Fostering, we’re proud to share the real stories of the people who make a difference every day. In this five-part video series, we meet Eli, one of our incredible Supported Lodgings providers.

Eli opens her door and her heart to an 18-year-old young person preparing for independent living. Through honest reflections and heartfelt moments, Eli shows what Supported Lodgings is truly about; family, community and change that lasts a lifetime.

Part One: Sharing Her Home and Heart

In the first part of the series, Eli gives us a glimpse into everyday life as a Supported Lodgings provider. She talks about what it’s like for her two young children to share their home with an 18-year-old young lady, and how their family routine has naturally adapted. From laughter around the dinner table to small but powerful moments of connection, Eli reflects on how welcoming someone new into the family can be both rewarding and transformative, for everyone involved.

Part Two: How It All Began

In the second video, Eli explains what first made her look into becoming a Supported Lodgings provider. She shares how she found out about the scheme, what encouraged her to take that first step, and what the assessment process was really like.

Her story is a reassuring reminder that you don’t need special qualifications or experience to make a difference, just a spare room, some patience and the willingness to support a young person as they learn to stand on their own two feet.

Part Three: Seeing the Difference

Part three is where Eli reflects on the moment she realised how much her young person had grown since moving in. She talks about the increase in confidence, the growing independence, and the huge sense of pride she feels watching a once uncertain teenager step out into the world with belief in herself.

Eli also shares how this experience has changed her own life, teaching her more about empathy, resilience and the importance of community.

Part Four: Why We Need More People Like Eli

In the fourth part of the series, Eli speaks about why she thinks we don’t yet have enough Supported Lodgings providers. She reminds us that caring for each other is a basic human need — and that society would be a better place if everyone gave just a little bit of their time to help others.

Her words are simple but powerful, capturing the spirit of Hull’s fostering community perfectly.

Part Five: Talking Openly About Money

In the final video, Eli tackles the often unspoken topic of money. She explains that Supported Lodgings providers receive a weekly allowance to help cover the costs of having an extra person in their home. This support means providers can focus on what matters most — creating a stable, caring environment without worrying about the financial strain.

Eli’s honesty helps remove the stigma around this subject and highlights how Supported Lodgings is both emotionally and practically supported.
