Basic fostering allowance

As a foster carer with Hull Fostering, you will receive a generous weekly allowance to support the children in your care and is intended to cover the cost of looking after a child in your home.

Weekly allowance rates for fostering are dependent on the age of each child in your care.

Gifts and Experience allowance

We will also give you an additional allowance for providing experiences for the children in your care to go on holiday, cover birthday presents and a festival such as Christmas, Diwali or Eid.

This payment can be paid as an extra weekly amount or lump sum.

Payment for skills

You don’t need any special qualifications to apply to be a foster carer, all of the training you will need is provided free of charge by Hull Fostering.

Your dedication and willingness to learn deserves recognition too, so we also provide our foster carers a ‘payment for skills’ weekly amount, which is for you to spend as you wish.

We have 3 skills levels, which we will encourage you to progress through and is based on your experience, skills and training.

Additional fostering allowances

Hull Fostering will also provide -

  • school uniform allowance
  • babysitting allowance
  • cover for your mileage for any fostering journeys outside the normal day-to-day

  • access to 7 monthly support groups and after school activities,

We also pay your annual Fostering Network membership.

Examples for how the payments are received

Amy a newly approved foster carer caring for a 4-month-old baby with level 1 skills would typically receive an allowance of £1172.32 every 4 weeks.

Amy would also have been given a setting up grant to cover the cost of preparing her home for a child, babysitting costs, travel expenses and her whole family given ‘Live It’ membership cards. Hull Fostering will also cover Amy’s Fostering Network membership and Max card application. 

Mike and Karen, foster carers for one year caring for an 11 year old and a 5 year old with level 1 skills would typically receive an allowance of £2625.97 every 4 weeks.

Mike and Karen will also be awarded a £500 annual loyalty payment after their first annual review. They will have the relevant mileage, and their family leisure passes, Fostering Network membership and their Max card application covered. We will also pay towards Mike and Karen’s babysitting costs each month.

Kimberley a foster carer of 6 years caring for 2 children aged 12 and 7-years-old with level 3 skills would typically receive an allowance of £2913.97 every 4 weeks.

Kimberley will also be awarded a £500 annual loyalty payment after her annual review. She will have the relevant mileage, and her families leisure passes, Fostering Network membership and Max card application covered. We will also pay towards Kimberley’s babysitting costs each month.

Other benefits

You could get disability benefits for your foster child if they meet the criteria and you may also be able to claim Carer’s Allowance if your foster child gets Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payment.
